What makes you feel good?"
My wife recently asked; "What makes you feel good?" I smiled, and
replied, "Well dear, after 17 years of marriage, you ought to know that
by now." We both enjoyed a good laugh and that was the end of the
discussion.
Fast forward a few weeks later. Chicago's old man winter had finally
relinquished his post. Seemingly overnight, my winter-induced coma was
replaced by a childlike enthusiasm for the season. I went to a Cubs
game. I started running in the forest preserve. My family enjoyed walks
around the neighborhood. I broke out my favorite golf shirt. You get the
picture, right?
Then it occurred to me. You know — that question my wife posed a few
weeks earlier, when she asked, "What makes me feel good?" I was relaxing
on my winter-bruised Adirondack chair, enjoying the spring breeze and
warmer temperatures. Outdoor living . . . I thought! That's one thing
that makes me feel good. Whether it's at home or on the go, I just love
being outside.
The fact is, most people relish the outdoors.
Residential Design &
Build's 2008 Market Trends Survey reveals again, that outdoor living
space is among the most popular with consumers. Furthermore, when you
create designs and fulfill your client's vision of an outdoor space,
they will be quick to refer your company for years to come.
Case in point: My neighbor (Jim) recently called me regarding the
contractor that designed and built our outdoor living area nearly seven
years ago. He's heard me comment regarding my satisfaction with the job.
He's observed our family (dog and all) thoroughly enjoy our space. I've
even gone so far as to point out the quality construction and finer
nuances of the design.
In this tepid market, you might think Jim's primary objective was to
parlay the best deal because (as if you haven't heard already) "the
market is soft and deals are to be had." Right? Wrong! No question; Jim
wanted a good value, but he was most interested in engaging a reliable
contractor and creating something special. Not just a deck, but an
outdoor space that makes him and his family — feel good.
A builder I know, Dan Connelly (pictured at left), is busy designing
and building dreams this year. Are you?
